Stop Smoking Pill – How It Works

You know you need to quit smoking, that its horrible for your health, etc.  You know its going to be hard.  You’ve heard of a stop smoking pill but wonder if it’ll really work for you and how does it work anyway?  Do you take one and suddenly stop craving cigarettes?  Does it make cigarettes taste bad?  Does it get you hooked on something else?

No, no and no.  A stop smoking pill can help stop the physical cravings for cigarettes and help with withdrawal symptoms.  A stop smoking pill is part of a quit smoking program.  Without you making a serious commitment to quit in the first place, no magic pill will help.  Cigarettes will still smell and taste the same, but you won’t want them anymore after you get over the hump.  A stop smoking pill isn’t addictive and won’t hook you on anything else.

Sound too good to be true?  Its not and along with your commitment to quit they do work.

The most commonly used stop smoking pill in use today is Chantix (varenicline).  What makes Chantix successful is that it helps you in 2 ways.  It takes away the pleasure of smoking and it helps ease the withdrawal symptoms that are so difficult to overcome.

In a nutshell, Chantix attaches itself to the same receptors in your brain that nicotine does.  When it does, these receptors release dopamine, the “pleasure” drug in your body giving you the same sensation of pleasure that inhaling cigarette smoke does.  Since the Chantix is there first and hangs on, adding nicotine to the mix doesn’t do anything more.  You can’t up the “pleasure” by smoking, so smoking doesn’t bring you the pleasure it otherwise would.

Chantix also releases additional dopamine slowly into your system to help with the withdrawal symptoms.  It prevents the deep lows and depression you can have in withdrawal.  It acts as a shield to both your “pleasure” receptors and eases your withdrawal from nicotine.

A stop smoking pill isn’t a magic bullet that will make you quit smoking all on its own.  You need to be committed to quitting and follow through with the program once you start.  Its not easy, but you CAN do it!
